Inner West Council in Sydney, New South Wales, has decided to plan a ‘Pride Centre’, employ a LGBTIQ engagement officer and start an awards scheme for ‘LGBTIQ-friendly’ businesses. The announcement is the second in Australia for a ‘Pride Centre’, with Victoria’s State Government already pledging $15 million to build a similar facility in St Kilda.
The Australian Christian Lobby appealed to Inner West councillors not to support the initiatives, questioning the council’s funding priorities. The ACL said Inner West Council’s 2017/18 grants program gave away $6500 in funding for an LGBTIQ picnic but gave no support to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital’s request for $14000 in funding assistance for Cancer Services and Neonatal Intensive Care.
Another Sydney council, Randwick City, voted last week to support the ‘Yes’ campaign by flying rainbow flags from public buildings and engaging in social media and online promotion.
