Today, 7 December 2017, Australia joined the rank of nations which think that they can redefine the age old tradition of marriage. At the very beginning of the world, when God created mankind, He created them male and female and He brought Eve to Adam. This was the first marriage. There and then God instituted that a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. But now, following several other western countries, Australia believes that it should change that age old institution. That is should be wiser than God. This is another step on the way of mankind turning away from God and rejecting the divine wisdom.
Between 130 and 140 (out of 150) members of the House of Representatives voted in favour of the bill. Opponents including Liberals Andrew Hastie, Kevin Andrews and Tony Abbott pushed for changes, but none of their amendments succeeded. When it came to the final vote, they abstained from voting. Queensland crossbencher Bob Katter, and LNP MPs David Littleproud and Keith Pitt, and Victorian Liberal Russell Broadbent were the four to vote against the bill. Several abstained.
PM Malcolm Turnbull said: “It’s time for more marriages, more commitment, more love, more respect. This belongs to all of us. This is Australia – fair, diverse, loving and filled with respect for every one of us. This is a great day – it belongs to every Australian.”
However, the Bible teaches us that this is not the way to more love and respect. And the proof of it can be seen in many of the countries that already legalized same sex marriage. It certainly did not lead to a more loving, caring and respectful society. Generally we see, that a move away from God’s Word leads to what the Lord Jesus describes in Matthew 24:12 :
“And because lawlessness will abound, the love of many will grow cold.”
Paul describes in Romans 1 a number of the symptoms of such a society, and the homosexual lifestyle is mentioned there as one of the symptoms. This is all the result of denying the truth of God’s Word.
They do not only suppress the truth themselves, but they are now also working hard to oppress all those who continue to speak the truth of God’s Word. It became clear that there was no desire at all to protect those who still uphold the Biblical institution of marriage. Christian schools and other Christian organisations may be affected by this.
How do we as Christians respond to this?
In the verse following the one quoted above, the Lord Jesus says:
“But he who endures to the end shall be saved.”
Endure to the end. That is what we must do. Endure in doing what is good, and upholding the truth.
The answer to all this is not for us as Christians to withdraw from this society into our own protective circles. On the contrary. There is a lot of work to do for the church.
In a society in which the love of many is growing cold and is disappearing, there we will continue to show love and act in love. Don’t repay evil with evil, don’t fight back with worldly means, but show to this world what real love is. The love our Prime Minister was talking about will soon disappoint. That is not real love. It is only the satisfaction of our own feelings. Once the euphoria about this decision is gone, people will wake up to the reality that it didn’t make this world any better. People who fought for it with all that is in them, will discover that there is an emptiness left, that will have to be filled with something else. And they will start fighting for the next social issue. They are misguided. They don’t know where to seek and how to find real love.
True love comes from God and all those who belong to Jesus Christ are called to show His love to this world. Our society will need to hear a whole lot more about Christ’s Love, to be saved from the clutches of Satan. Let us pray without ceasing for God’s grace, and continually work to show love to this world, without adapting to the life of this world.
