I received an email this week, which I’m permitted to share:

I’m going to tell you why I send my children to this school. 
It’s not because I had such a wonderful experience here as a student. I didn’t. I wasn’t understood. I had family issues that I couldn’t talk about. No one reached out to me. I felt that I had a huge label plastered over my uniform which said “lazy, unmotivated and unreliable”. I didn’t learn so easily, and though no one said it, I knew I was one of the dumb kids. I’m sure I exasperated the teachers with some of my behaviours.

I left as soon as I could.

But I send my children here. I think things are different; we live in a different time. They enjoy being here, they feel they belong. OK, you have the days when they want to stay home… but every child has that. But on the whole, this school is doing great things. So my kids are having a different experience than me, and I’m grateful for that. But that’s not why I send them here. Even if you guys didn’t have it together like you do, I’d still send them here.

I vowed for my children. I promised to do my best in raising my children as God’s children. And I realise that with regards to their education, the school is His gift to me. The unique tie between our home, church and school won’t be found anywhere else.

That’s what I told my neighbour on the other side of the fence.
