Victoria: Reason Party launches bid to remove charitable status from religious groups

Victoria’s Reason Party (formerly known as the Sex Party) has put a motion before parliament to delete ‘advancement of religion’ from the definition of a charity. If successful, the bill would remove tax exempt status from religious schools and hospitals, as well as other charities including nursing homes. The Australian Family Association in an email to members this week said the action would not only put the survival of many of these services in jeopardy but would ultimately result in higher taxes as governments were forced to take over the provision of services formerly done by faith-based agencies.
