Reading: Exodus 1:1-7

The name Exodus means: to depart.

Overview of Exodus: In Genesis God begins to gather, defend, and preserve His church which He has chosen to everlasting life through Jesus Christ, as promised in Genesis 3:15. God builds His church through the families of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. He makes His covenant with them, promising His mercy will be extended to all the families of the earth. Exodus is the continuation of this work of God. It records the power of God and his triumph over Egypt’s armies and gods, the rescue of Israel from slavery and their journey to Mt Sinai where they receive God’s law. Even though Israel is often unfaithful and unthankful, God continues to care for the church. This gives us confidence so that we may approach God in prayer, not doubting His grace and love.

Exodus also records the events at Mt Sinai which are very important for the church of all times. God gives to Israel the Ten Commandments and how they are to be applied in daily life. These are divided into two groups. The first four commandments deal with the love and worship of God. To these are added ceremonies, feasts and exercises of worship, including those to be done in the tabernacle. The other six laws focus on the duties towards the neighbour. To these are added laws and regulations that promote the wellbeing of people and justice.

Israel also receives instructions from the Lord for the design of the tabernacle, all its contents and the priest’s clothing. This is followed by the actual construction. When everything was completed the glory of the Lord filled the tabernacle, illustrating God lived with Israel.
