Meditation: Genesis 10

Reading: Genesis 10

In this chapter we learn that Noah and his wife are the common ancestors of all the people of the earth. These ancestors originally served the one and only God, because there is only one God who made us all. Isaiah 46:9 says “Remember the former things of old, for I am God, and there is no other”. This means that all the people should serve that one God. This gives the church a solid foundation to do mission work today.

Genesis 10 also gives us important historical information about the origin and distribution of the nations over the world. The nations have their origin in one family. God, in wisdom, decided that the descendants of this family should form different nations, each with their own character, quality and place to live (Genesis 10:5, 20, 31). This would be a help in the development of the whole earth, and bring out the potential God put into it at creation.

Key verse: Genesis 10:32 “These were the families of the sons of Noah, according to their generations, in their nations; and from these the nations were divided on the earth after the flood.”

Question: The ancestors of every person on earth (Noah and wife) originally served the one and only God, because there is only one God. Why did so many different religions develop from the one?
