Persecution In India

The persecution of Christians in India is getting more severe. Recently a pastor of a Christian congregation was found hanging from a rope in his home, adjacent to the church. Authorities were quick to rule his death a suicide, but there is so much that points in a different direction. This pastor had to endure constant harassment by local hindus, who constantly tried to torment him for the last six months. Last year, a group of extremists beat the pastor.

The Christian advocacy group Open Doors U.S.A. ranked India 11th on its list of the world’s 50 worst countries for persecution of Christians. Last year India was 15th on the list. Now it ranks just behind Iran and Yemen.

The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has designated India a “Tier 2” nation in its watch list of countries experiencing systematic, ongoing or egregious harassment or violence against religious groups, together with countries like Cuba, Iraq and Afghanistan.
